Ricky Fernandez’s start in athletics was as a soccer player but he wanted to find something more physical. After exploring different sports, he discovered football and has never looked back.
Now a senior at Broken Arrow High School, football is Ricky’s outlet to escape the troubles and stress of daily life.
“My sport has taught me how to deal with adversity, how to keep going and be persistent,” Fernandez said.
The brotherhood between his teammates is the best part about being on a team. Ricky enjoys representing his team and BAHS as a student-athlete.
“Each and every player is like my brother,” he says, “I love the feeling of being under the lights and going out on the field showing everyone what we are about.”
The following advice helps him stay on course.
“There will always be adversity. Our preparation is key,” said Fernandez.
He is thankful to coaches, teachers, and teammates who support his athletic pursuits. His teammate, Chance Marick mentored Ricky coming into the program. This built him into a better player. His favorite teacher is Mrs. Lewis.
“She helped me and was one of the best teachers I have ever had,” said Fernandez.
Ricky is particularly thankful to his parents for all their hard work. He enjoys spending time with family and would love the opportunity to take them on a vacation to Acadia National Park in Maine.
“Without them, I wouldn’t be who I am today,” says Fernandez.
The professional athlete he looks up to is NFL center Jason Kelce. He admires Kelce for how hard he plays and how he does not let his size hold him back.
Ricky’s favorite meal is Chicken Alfredo. Many of his favorite team memories involve going out and eating with the rest of the defensive linemen.
“This is always a fun experience,” he says.
When not on the football field, Ricky enjoys spending time outdoors fishing and raising animals.
