If you’ve seen the Broken Arrow cheer squad at a football game or in competition, then you’ve certainly seen Cherish Dixon do her thing on the sideline. Dixon loves being part of the squad and helping the fans get into the game.
“What I love most about my team and being a cheerleader is the sense of family that comes with being a team. We have a chant we do before everything, it’s ATAP loads of positivity TNLU (they’re not like us) trust me, trust you, attitude we want it, we’ll get it, BA all the way, TIGERS! The team makes a new one every year corresponding with our state theme. This year we took it out of the Kendrick Lamar song, They Not Like Us,” said Dixon.
In the classroom, Dixon said her favorite subject is History.
“My favorite subject in school is History. I love learning about the past and how we can learn from it. My favorite teacher that I have had so far is my sophomore year English teacher. We were best if friends and she was a really nice and a fair teacher,” said Dixon.
Dixon also takes courses with Huntington Learning Center.
“The courses I take at Huntington are reading and math. They help me catch up on things I have missed in elementary because I didn’t understand at the time. What I like most about Huntington Learning Center is the one-on-one time with my teacher so I can ask questions and get help on homework if needed,” said Dixon.
Preparing for competition is tough. Dixon said she has a routine when she needs to mentally prepare herself to take the floor. But some of her teammates will keep everyone laughing and loose.
“The teammate that keeps everyone laughing and who is serious would have to be our co-captain Jaxon Roop. He deeply cares about our team and want to win. He is also so funny, always there with a quick joke or funny saying,” Dixon said. “How I mentally prepare for competition is listening to music with the team and I dance it out like a huge dance party, blasting music and inviting other teams basically making a mosh pit before competing.” Dixon said she plans on joining the U.S. Marine Corps after high school and later pursuing a career in law enforcement.
“My dream is to be in the civil rights unit of the FBI.”
