The Future Farmers of America program is one that allows students the opportunity to get hands-on experience in a variety of subjects and topics. Kaitlyn Johnson is a member of the FFA chapter at Broken Arrow High School and she says that she has enjoyed being in the program.
“In FFA I have competed in Leadership Development Events by competing in the FFA creed,” she said. “I have competed in Career Development Events in which I have competed in multiple categories with team members and I have competed in cattle grading and horse judging. I’ve held an officer position for the past two years and have done so much with my chapter all the way from petting zoos to working in the greenhouse to going off early in the morning to compete.”
Johnson is a sophomore at Broken Arrow and she is proud to be able to help promote the program at her school.
Joining FFA was an easy decision for Johnson and she says that it is a kind of family tradition.
“Growing up, I have always heard about FFA from different people in my family,” she said. “Many people in my family come from an agricultural background including myself so by hearing all of these stories I knew I wanted to experience that for myself so I signed up for the agriculture class.”
Kaitlyn enjoys being a part of the program and says she enjoys telling others about what they do.
“Coming from an urban area, we get to spread awareness about what FFA is and why agriculture is so important,” she said. “Even for such a small thing I do I feel like I am making a small difference and if we all ban together we can change the way others look at agriculture.
Throughout her time in FFA, Kaitlyn has had many outstanding experiences. But out of all of them, she has one that stands out the most.
“Our 2023 officer retreat was definitely one for the books,” she recalled. “All of the officers sat down to play a game together where there were teams of two and both were blindfolded and had to guess what they were eating and the awful food was made by our ag teachers and whichever team guessed right won the challenge.”
