Broken Arrow High School’s Cooper Bates has been a student in the BA Public School system for life. Now a senior and a member of the varsity football team, Bates said he loves representing his school and town on the field.
“I’ve been at BA since kindergarten. This group of guys have been with me since back in INFC (Indian Nations Football Conference) days. They have had my back since day one. I have loved growing up playing with them in the Broken Arrow program. It gives me a sense of pride watching them develop as players and people,” said Bates.
Playing in front of the home crowd is special for every member of the football team, but Bates gives credit to the student section and their participation in the game.
“The student body, staff and jungle are my favorite part of being a student-athlete. Our jungle is ridiculously fun and encouraging. I also have several teachers and support staff that show up and lift me up whether we win or lose,” said Bates.
Bates has played football, baseball, basketball and wrestled for the Tigers during his career.
“I also play baseball. The boys and coaches on the baseball team are my biggest supporters. I love those guys,” said Bates.
This season on the gridiron, Bates said he’s excited to play Jenks in district play. Bates is quick to mention some of his teammates as players to watch.
“Everyone should watch Ricky Fernandez, Kaibre Harris, and Jaime Murillo,” said Bates.
The senior said his grandfather has been a big influence in his life.
“He was at every game, and I could always count on him,” said Bates.
When he has some free time, Bates said he enjoys hanging out at the lake and deer hunting in the Fall. Bates said he wants the class of 2024 to be remembered for competing and representing the Tiger family.
“I hope everyone remembers our team for our pride and ability to overcome adversity. We had at least 14 starters graduate. Having a young group is difficult but I already see the younger guys stepping up and the improvements from practice to practice.”
