Chatting with Broken Arrow’s DJ Howell – Presented by Hayhurst Funeral Home

David (DJ) Howell has been an important piece to Broken Arrow’s historic season on the hardwood.

Howell, who last season was the first freshman to start at Broken Arrow since 2002, has helped the Tigers to a remarkable 22-0 record and No. 1 ranking in Class 6A. The 6-foot-5 point guard is averaging over 10 points per game, 4.3 rebounds and 5.1 assists.

“He will be the next player from BA that people are talking about,” Broken Arrow head coach Beau Wallace said prior to the season. “The best part of his game is that he is never rushed no matter what. He is an elite passer and a really good rebounder on both ends of the floor.”

How long have you played basketball?

DJ: I’ve been playing basketball since the 3rd grade.

How do you balance your time between sports and academics or other activities?

DJ: I wake up to go to school at 7:50 a.m., have practice from 1:55 p.m. – 3:35 p.m., and then I get shots up after practice. So after that, I go home and I do whatever homework I have then I just chill in my free time.

Do you have any goals this year in basketball, academics, or other activities?

DJ: The goal for this year for basketball is to win a state championship.

What professional athlete do you model your game after and why?

DJ: I model my game after Darius Garland (Cleveland Cavaliers) because of his passing abilities and he’s an underrated talent.

What is your favorite drill to do in training?

DJ: My favorite drill is either ball handling or more shooting.

What are your strengths and what have you improved on the most over the course of your high school career?

DJ: Being more vocal as a younger player.

What do you love most about being a student-athlete at Broken Arrow?

DJ: I just love the environment and the atmosphere around the school and the way that they support us in all aspects.

What do you enjoy doing in your free time?

DJ: In my free time I just watch a lot of films of myself and a lot of college athletes.

What are some achievements you’ve accomplished over your career?

DJ: Last year I was the first freshman at Broken Arrow to start since 2002.

What qualities do you think make someone a good teammate or leader?

DJ: Just being positive all the time and encouraging others, and not having a bad day affect them negatively.

What are your plans after high school?

DJ: My plan after high school is to play at a Division I school and see where it takes me.
